WASHTENAW COUNTY (WWJ) - A man has died of his injuries after an alleged drunk driver traveling in the wrong direction on the freeway crashed head-on into his vehicle in Washtenaw County.

Michigan State Police said they responded to the scene of the crash, on southbound US-23 at US-12, at around 3:15 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18. The collision closed the freeway for several hours as police conducted an investigation.

In an update posted to social media on Tuesday, MSP said they discovered that a 39-year-old woman from Battle Creek was driving on US-23 in the wrong direction when she collided with another vehicle.

The head-on crash resulted in the death of Jeffrey Piotter, a 34-year-old man from Milan who was in that other car, police said.

The woman, determined by police to be the at-fault driver, was injured in the incident and taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital for treatment.

Police said only two vehicles were involved in the crash and no other injures were reported.

While MSP listed alcohol as a factor in the crash, police did not immediately release the at-fault driver's name or announce any charges.
