BLOOMFIELD TWP. (WWJ) -- A Wixom man could serve jail time after police say he drunkenly drove the wrong way on Telegraph Road last weekend.
At around 9 p.m. Sunday, Bloomfield Township Police said multiple 911 calls came in about a wrong-way driver headed southbound on the northbound lanes of Telegraph, in the area of Long Lake Road.
When police spotted the driver, in a white Volvo, he was still driving the wrong way, while approaching Quarton Road.
Police said the officers quickly activated their emergency lights, slowing traffic in the busy area, while the Volvo passed the police cruiser southbound in the northbound lanes at around 50 mph, and continued on.
Police said the Volvo nearly hit a motorcyclist before finally pulling over near Country Club Drive.
Police said the 55-year-old man smelled strongly like booze, he was unsteady on his feet, and his speech was slurred when he spoke with officers.
The driver eventually admitted to drinking a bottle of $3.99 Bay Bridge wine, police said. He attempted a field sobriety test, and was taken into custody.
At the police station. a breath test found that the driver had a 0.18 BAC, which is more than twice the legal limit to drive in Michigan.
The driver was held overnight before being released with an appearance ticket.
Police said this is just one of five impaired drivers arrested in Bloomfield Township in the past week.
"We commend our officers for their quick reaction and warning to motorists that may have prevented a severe crash," the Bloomfield Township PD said, in a news release.
"Driving under the influence is not only against the law, but it puts the lives of innocent individuals at risk. We remind the community that drinking and driving is never acceptable. Always designate a sober driver or use alternative means of transportation, such as ride-sharing."
Under Michigan's "Super Drunk Laws," drivers with a BAC more than twice the state's legal limit of .08% face stiffer penalties, including up to 180 days in jail if convicted.
The driver's name was not released, pending an arraignment.
