SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- A lot of struggling families in Metro Detroit are going to get some help to heat their homes this winter, thanks to thousands of generous WWJ Newsradio 950 listeners.
On a chilly day like today, many of us wouldn't think twice about turning up our thermostats a couple of degrees. But it's not that simple for everyone.
Unfortunately, thousands of Michigan families can't even afford to run the furnace or keep the lights on due to job loss, illness or other emergencies throwing a wrench in their life plans.
And with the price of groceries, rent and other essentials sky-high, some have even faced the situation of choosing between warmth or providing food and medication for their families.
On Thursday, donors from all across the area stepped up in a big way, joining together to raise $298,508 in WWJ's 22nd Annual Winter Survival Radiothon for THAW, The Heat and Warmth Fund.
Around 90 cents of every dollar donated to THAW goes to direct services and programs.
Saunteel Jenkins, former CEO of THAW, said many of the people who benefit from the radiothon may be just like people close to you.
"There are kids right now who are in good homes; their families are doing to best they can every day, but they just need a little hand up," Jenkins said. "So, they are bright minds who need some help today so they can fulfill their potential tomorrow."
