Wyandotte police officer seriously injured during drug deal investigation

WYANDOTTE (WWJ) -- A police chase in Wyandotte following an undercover drug deal ended in a rollover crash, with one officer badly injured.

The incident happened on Wednesday around 1:30 p.m. when police attempted to arrest a man who was selling crack cocaine to undercover cops from a black Charger.

When the man appeared as though he was going to drive away, one officer tried to open his door to prevent him from fleeing the scene.

The suspect hit the gas and started dragging the officer along the ground. He was then thrown more than 20 feet, and suffered extensive injuries.

A police chase ensued along Oak Street until the suspect crashed and his vehicle flipped over onto the lawn of a home.

Deputy Chief Archie Hamilton told WXYZ that this is not the first time the suspect has caused this type of incident.

"This is the 4th time he flees the police, he’s on a tether but still on our roadways, it’s ridiculous,” Hamilton said. "The laws need more consequences for fleeing the police."

The suspect is currently in custody, and the officer is expected to make a full recovery.
