WYANDOTTE (WWJ) -- The death of a Wyandotte woman and her adult son over the weekend was found to be a murder-suicide, according to police.
The Wyandotte Police Department on Tuesday released more information about the case, following an investigation that began Saturday evening.
At around 6:20 p.m. on Sept. 5, a 67-year-old woman called 911 to report a dispute involving her son.
Responding officers arrived at the home on 6th Street to find it quiet, with blinds drawn and no one answering the door. Because officers did not have legal grounds to force entry, police said, they left the scene without taking any action.
Follow-up phone calls to the woman went unanswered.
At 3:15 a.m. the next morning, police said new information prompted officers to go back and enter the home, where they found the woman dead from multiple gunshot wounds.
Investigators identified the woman's 41-year-old son as the primary suspect and discovered her vehicle missing. License plate readers showed the car leaving the area minutes after the initial 911 call, leading investigators to conclude the victim had been killed on Saturday.
Police then tried to track the suspect’s cell phone and monitored Flock license plate readers, which showed the vehicle heading into Toledo, Ohio. The suspect temporarily disabled his phone, stalling tracking efforts.
Just before 10 a.m., cameras caught the vehicle heading north toward the Michigan border.
Before police could set up an interception, a Toledo police officer spotted the car pulling into a parking lot and moved to make an arrest.
That's when police said the man pulled out a handgun and shot himself. He died at the scene.
Police allege that ballistics testing confirmed the handgun used by the suspect matched the caliber of the shell casings found at the crime scene.
Police Chief Archie Hamilton said the identities of the victim and suspect are being withheld out of respect for the family.
