Florida prosecutors are considering filing a murder charge against a 10-year-old girl who allegedly shot and killed a woman at a barbecue in Orlando.
The charge stems from an incident that happened on Memorial Day, when the girl's mother -- 31-year-old Lakrisha Isaac -- got into a fight with another woman at an apartment complex.
As the fight continued to escalate, Issac handed her daughter a backpack containing a gun, police said. The girl then took the weapon out of the bag and fired two shots, killing 41-year-old Lashun Rodgers, according to authorities.
Witnesses told police that after firing the shots, the girl screamed, "You shouldn't have messed with my mother," WESH reported.
"This is one of the most tragic cases I have seen in my 22-year career," Monique Worrel, state attorney for Orange and Osceola counties, said in a statement.
Isaac was arrested at the scene and is facing charges of manslaughter, aggravated assault with a firearm, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and child neglect.
The girl was arrested on June 7 but has not been formally charged.
"Our office has started the process of reviewing this case and will consider all of the facts, including the age of the child, and all of the surrounding circumstances, when making a charging decision," Worrel said. "We anticipate that whatever charges we eventually file, if any, will ensure she receives the interventions necessary to address her behavior, help her change and grow, and ensure the public’s safety going forward."
On Wednesday, a judge ruled that the girl would remain in custody at a juvenile detention center for at least the next 21 days, pending a charging decision from the state, WKMG reported.
