PLAINFIELD, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Two people were killed Monday night when their vehicle was swept away by floodwaters in New Jersey, officials said.
The two victims were in a vehicle that was swept into Cedar Brook in Plainfield at the height of the storm, according to city officials.
The two people were pronounced dead at the scene, officials said. They haven't yet been identified but were reportedly both women.
The deaths came less than two weeks after two others were killed during a severe storm in Plainfield on July 3.
“All of Plainfield grieves this latest loss,” Mayor Adrian O. Mapp said in a statement. “To lose four residents in such a short span of time is unimaginable. We mourn with the families, and we remain committed to doing all we can to strengthen our emergency response systems and protect our residents from future harm.”
Gov. Phil Murphy—who declared a state of emergency during Monday’s storm, was touring damaged parts of the state Tuesday—said the state was not aware of any other storm victims.
"Last night we got crushed," Murphy said as he toured heavily-hit Berkeley Heights. "Sadly, two losses of life in Plainfield in a vehicle that was swept away. And sadly the deceased were extracted."
"The White House has been in touch this morning, which is a good sign," the governor said. "We'll be working with counties and communities to assess levels of damage."
The fast-moving storm brought 1 to 3 inches of rain to New York City, while suburbs to the north and west got anywhere from 3 to 6 inches in a matter of a couple of hours, causing the catastrophic flood damage to homes and businesses.
