In Palo Alto on Monday, President Joe Biden announced that his administration would be investing more than $600 million in federal spending on fighting climate change.
Biden was touring the coastal infrastructure of northern California at the Baylands Nature Preserve with the state’s Governor Gavin Newsom.
The president admitted that he often visited the area of the state for climate change-related reasons, naming wildfires and floods as the most recent concerns.
However, Biden’s latest trip to the state was a means for him to see the work being done to protect from extreme climate’s impacts.
“Just last week across the East Coast and Midwest, we saw what you’ve already seen here in California,” Biden said. “Millions of Americans, sheltering indoors. The air not safe to breathe. Orange haze covering the sky, it’s incredible.”
Governor Newsom also spoke at the event, introducing the president and also touched on his state’s efforts to fight climate change.
“The state of dreamers of doers of innovators. A state that long has prided itself on being on the leading and cutting edge of new ideas,” Newsom said.
