On the first night of the Democratic National Convention, President Joe Biden is expected to give a primetime address, according to a recent report.
The report comes from CNN, citing sources familiar with the planning. The report notes that the speech is expected to be a “big tribute” to the president.
Still, a Democratic National Committee convention official shared with CBS News that no programming decisions are final. However, it would be “consistent with historical precedent, current and past Presidents are expected to participate in convention programming.”
DNC spokesperson Matt Hill shared with CBS News that more will be shared about the convention soon but did not offer any confirmation on a speech from Biden.
“We look forward to sharing more soon about our convention in Chicago where Democrats will offer a forward-looking vision for our country that stands in stark contrast to the extremism from Donald Trump’s convention that would take America backwards,” Hill said.
The DNC kicks off on Monday, Aug. 19, and runs through Thursday, Aug. 22. The only confirmed speeches are that of the presidential and vice presidential nominees on Wednesday and Thursday.
President Biden reluctantly stepped out of the 2024 presidential race earlier this month after his rocky debate performance cast doubt and worry among Democrats.
He has endorsed his vice president, Kamala Harris, who is now the presumptive favorite to win the nominee, as no major contender has stepped up to challenge her. She has also received support from the necessary number of delegates to win the nominee.
She shared that after Biden dropped out and endorsed her, she still planned on earning and winning the nominee, not just having it handed to her as the president’s replacement.
A virtual roll call will help cement her as the nominee. That is expected to begin on Aug. 1 and conclude on Aug. 5.
