As President Joe Biden begins his third year in office, his approval rating continues to sit near the lowest it has been amidst criticisms over classified documents being found in his home in recent months.
According to a new poll from Reuters/Ipsos, 40% of Americans approve of the job Biden is doing as president.
Despite Democrats having a strong turnout in the midterm election, the Republican party appearing to be battling internally, and inflation falling again this month, Biden’s approval rating remains low.
One reason for the lack of support that Biden is receiving could be because of the numerous classified documents discovered in his home.
The president has received heavy criticism from Republicans and his opponents over the recent scandal. Many have called him a hypocrite for condemning former President Donald Trump and then doing something similar.
In fact, most Americans find Biden’s actions inappropriate, as a poll conducted by Quinnipiac University found that 60% of US adults think what he did was wrong. In addition, 71% of Americans said they viewed Biden’s actions as either “very serious” or “somewhat serious.”
The Justice Department has appointed special counsels for President Biden’s handling of the documents, just as it has for former President Trump.
Still, many have noted the differences between the two situations, as while Trump’s documents were taken by force during an FBI raid via a search warrant, the White House has maintained that Biden’s were handed over willingly after being discovered.
Still, Republicans have criticized the delay at which the information was made public surrounding Biden’s case, as the first set of documents were said to be found just before the midterm elections.
An approval rating of 40% is not the lowest that Biden has faced, bottoming out at around 36% last year in May and June, but as the president begins preparing for a re-election campaign, many are questioning whether or not he has enough support.
The poll from Reuters/Ipsos also noted several other issues Americans have with Washington, including only 20% approving of US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, 35% viewing the House of Representatives favorably, and 38% viewing the Senate positively.
Reuters/Ipsos conducted the poll from Friday to Sunday of last week and included responses from 1,035 adults. There is a margin of error of plus or minus 3%.
