The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office announced the charges on Wednesday against Tasha Haefs, 35. Police say they were called to the home in the 7300 block of Indiana Ave. for a disturbance call.

According to a probable cause statement, Haefs was the one who called police and said she believed the devil was trying to attack her before hanging up, local media reported.

When police arrived at the home, they found blood leading up to the front door and heard a woman singing inside. When they knocked on the door, the singing grew louder, according to officials.

That's when "they looked in and saw something very disturbing," Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said.

The boy's severed head was just inside the home's entrance. Court records state, officers forced their way into home and believed other children may have been inside.

Police found the boy’s body and saw Haefs with blood on her and knives and a screwdriver with apparent blood throughout the home, according to the affidavit. No other children were found, however, the family's dog was found decapitated in the basement.

Haefs told police the victim was her son and admitted killing him in a bathtub and decapitated him, according to court documents.

Baker released a long a statement, saying the child’s gruesome death "takes our breath away." She also called for the region to make improvements on working with people who are mentally ill.

Haefs has been charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Prosecutors have requested that she be held without bond.
