The U.S. Coast Guard says rescue crews are searching for survivors after a suspected human smuggling boat reportedly capsized about 45 miles east of the Fort Pierce, Fla., inlet over the weekend.

A good Samaritan contacted the Coast Guard on Tuesday after rescuing a man who was clinging to a capsized boat.

The survivor said that the boat left Bimini, Bahamas on Saturday night with 39 people on board.

Severe weather and rough seas caused the boat to capsize, according to officials.

The survivor also told the Coast Guard that no one on board was wearing a life jacket.

Rescue crews are using boats and helicopters to actively search for survivors in the water.

The incident is a "suspected human smuggling venture," according to investigators.
