Confirmed tornadoes touch down in White Lake, Armada and Port Austin Saturday

(WWJ) At least three confirmed tornadoes touched down in the southeastern Michigan area Saturday, and more may be identified.

According to the National Weather Service, a F-1 tornado with estimated peak winds of 100 mph touched down Saturday evening in White Lake, Mich. This tornado caused one injury, said the service.

It also uprooted several healthy trees, caused shingle and roof damage, tore off at least one garage door and toppled several trees on to a house. Much of the damage was near Pontiac Lake Road.

Tornado sirens could be heard around the Detroit area Saturday night. In addition to the White Lake tornado, there were also reports of possible twisters in Macomb, Oakland, Wayne and Genesee counties.

Storms left serious damage in Macomb County, where winds up to 105 mph ripped roofs off houses as an EF-1 tornado touched down near the intersection of 34 Mile Road and Armada Ridge Road in Armada.

At 7:52 p.m., radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located in the area, moving east at 20 mph

Forecasters say its path was about 3.6 miles long and 700 yards wide as it tore through downtown Armada, uprooting trees and damaging several home and businesses in the area.

“I guess it got really black and it sounded like what you hear on movies, like a train coming through your house,” Armada resident Carrie Cercone told The Detroit News. “I just grabbed my son, held him and said ‘Please God let us be OK.’ After four or five minutes it was gone, it was done.”

Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel, who was in Armada surveying the damage, told WWJ the downtown area was hit pretty hard.

Along with the confirmed tornadoes in Armada, White Lake, and Port Austin, there were several other suspected twisters in the area Saturday.

One was at the Lodge and Davison freeways in Detroit, one was near Clarkston in Oakland County, and another caused damage near Flushing, west of Flint, in Genesee County.

More than 72,000 DTE customers are still out of power as of Monday morning due to the storms.
