A cruise ship that was headed to Alaska this week didn’t get there smoothly, as one of the workers on the ship was arrested when it made port on allegations that he stabbed a woman and two security guards with scissors.
According to the U.S. attorney’s office, the man behind the alleged stabbings was Ntando Sogoni, 35, of South Africa.
Sogoni has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon within maritime and territorial jurisdiction.
An affidavit from FBI Special Agent Matthew Judy, obtained by CBS News, shared that Sogoni had recently been hired by the cruise line, the Norwegian Encore, in Seattle on Sunday.
The ship had departed that day for a weeklong trip that would include stops in Alaska and British Columbia.
However, late on Sunday night, while en route to Alaska, workers on the ship noticed Sogoni trying to deploy a lifeboat, and when he was confronted, they brought him to a medical center for an evaluation.
While there, the affidavit said that he “became irrational and attempted to leave,” but when he was stopped, he “physically attacked” a guard and a nurse.
He then ran into another room, where he grabbed a pair of scissors, stabbed a woman being examined, and then stabbed two guards who tried to subdue him, it shared.
Eventually, the affidavit says the guards were able to restrain him, holding him in a “shipboard jail.”
None of the injuries were considered life-threatening.
After arriving in Juneau on Tuesday, Sogoni was arrested by the FBI and now faces up to 10 years in prison for each count brought against him, the U.S. attorney’s office shared.
