As people prepare to celebrate Halloween this weekend and into Monday, they might want to double check any sweet treats they’re planning to offer at parties.

That’s because three separate recalls were announced this week via the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for gelato, cookies and dipping caramel.

A recall of Tiramisu Twist Cookies produced by Daiso California LLC of La Mirada, Calif., was announced Friday. In this case, the recall was issued because certain almonds and hazelnuts were not identified on the packaging.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to almonds and hazelnuts run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” said the FDA notice.

These Tiramisu Twist Cookies were sold in Daiso stores located in California, Washington, Nevada, Texas, New York, and New Jersey. They are sold in 3.4 oz gold bags with a large image of two cookies.

As of Friday, there had been one reported case of allergic reaction to this product and it has been pulled from stores. Daiso is offering full refunds and can be contacted at 833-888-1610.

In Michigan, Zingerman’s Creamery of Ann Arbor recalled 58 pints and 10 quarts of Harvest Pumpkin Gelato Thursday due to concerns about an egg allergen. It also recalled 173 pints and 50 quarts of Paw Paw Gelato, a product made with the Paw Paw fruit native to Michigan and other parts of the U.S.

Zingerman’s made changes to its gelato recipes this year and labels for these seasonal products were not updated to reflect the addition of egg yolk. However, the packages do contain a notice that the gelatos were made in a facility with eggs.

“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to egg run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” said the FDA recall notice.

Both the Harvest Pumpkin and Paw Paw gelato were distributed in Ann Arbor and Chelsea, Mich., through Zingerman’s Creamery, Zingerman’s Deli, Zingerman’s Mail Order Argus Farm Stop and Agricole Farm Stop.

“The lots that are recalled are: Paw Paw (220916, 220928, 221005, 221012, 221018) Harvest Pumpkin (220909, 220919, 220928),” said the FDA notice. “The lot number can be found on the top left corner of the nutrition label.”

No illnesses have been reported to date regarding the gelato.
Consumers with questions may contact Zingerman’s at (734)-929-6450 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Dipping caramel sold at five Whole Foods stores in Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska was also recalled Thursday due to concerns about wheat allergies.

“The product may contain wheat, which is not declared on the product label,” said the FDA notice. “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat should not consume this product because they run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction.”

Dipping caramel covered by the recall was sold in the bakery department of three Colorado stores, one Nebraska store and one Kansas store.
It was packaged in plastic containers with Whole Foods Market scale labels reading “Dipping Caramel by the Pound” and a product code of 34888. Sell by dates for the recalled product are 10/25/22 – 11/15/22 and it went on sale this month.

“All affected product has been removed from store shelves,” said the FDA notice. “The mislabeling issue was discovered by a store employee.
No illnesses have been reported to date.”

Whole Foods Market is offering a full refund for customers who can bring a valid receipt into stores. Customers can ask additional questions at 844-936-8255 daily between the hours of 6 a.m. and noon CST.
