California Governor Gavin Newsom is launching a billboard campaign in several red states.
The signs tout access to abortion in the Golden State.
Newsom said it's all about protecting a woman's right to choose.
"Just launched billboards in 7 of the most restrictive anti-abortion states that explain how women can access care–no matter where they live," Newsom said on Twitter. "To any woman seeking an abortion in these anti-freedom states: CA will defend your right to make decisions about your own health."
The billboards are going up in Texas, Indiana, Mississippi, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota and Oklahoma.
Newsom shared images on the billboards on Twitter, and tagged the governor in each state to let them know the ads were launching.
Each billboard advertises the state's new reproductive health website, abortion.ca.gov.
Billboards in Texas, Ohio and South Dakota depict a woman in a white dress with her hands in handcuffs. The state "doesn't own your body. You do," the ad says. Similar billboards in Indiana and South Carolina have the same message, but without the woman's picture.
In Oklahoma and Mississippi, the billboards show a contemplative woman along with the words, "Need an abortion? California is ready to help." The ads also include a bible passage from from the Gospel of Mark, "Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no greater commandment that these."
"Abortion is legal, safe and accessible here in California – whether or not you live here, know that we have your back," Newsom said in a statement announcing the state's abortion services website. "As Republican states continue rolling back fundamental civil rights and even try to prevent people from accessing information online or crossing state lines for care, you're welcome here in California and we'll continue to fight like hell for you."
