OAKVILLE, Mo. (KMOX) - Hairstylist and owner of J West Salon in St. Louis County, Jen Gideon says she’s cutting more mullets.

"The mullets are super hot right now. All the high school kids are getting them. We are perming mullets," Gideon says. "We do it everyday."

Gideon and her staff are not the only ones seeing an uptick in mullet requests. Other local salons are seeing an increase in requests for a Kentucky waterfall, neckwarmer, Mississippi mud flap or whatever you may call it.

However, the amount of increase depends on the clientele of the salon. Most stylists report that it's the high school athletes going for the cut.

And they're not all cheap. Gideon said the perms that some young men are getting with their mullets are not cheap and hairstylists appreciate the extra cash flow.

Although the mullet moniker was coined by the hip-hop artists the Beastie Boys, the style has roots dating back thousands of years. History.com says the ancient Greek poet Homer in The Iliad mentions military men with “their forelocks cropped, hair grown long at the backs."

Gideon says after doing hair for over 20 years she sees most styles come full circle.
