Since former President Donald Trump announced in November that he would run for the office again, multiple outlets have noted that Melania Trump hasn’t been in the public eye much.
With the bombshell news that her husband was indicted Thursday, how is the former first lady dealing with the news?
About the indictment
Trump became the first former or sitting president in history to be indicted Thursday. A Manhattan grand jury voted for the measure. Live updates on the case are rolling in through Audacy’s 1010 WINS in New York City.
Per WINS, the exact charges Trump faces remained sealed Friday. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office investigated an alleged scheme involving falsifying Trump Organization business records. Trump is accused of participating in the scheme by giving his “fixer” Michael Cohen a “hush money” payment for adult film star Stormy Daniels in 2016 to cover up an alleged affair.
Melania had recently given birth to Trump’s son, Barron, when the alleged affair took place in 2006.
“Trump has denied any wrongdoing in the case,” said 1010 WINS.
He is expected to be arraigned next Tuesday.
Previously, Audacy reported that Trump reportedly wanted his potential arrest to be a spectacle, including a public arrest with handcuffs. According to The Hill, the presidential candidate raised $4 million in the 24 hours following the indictment.
“THE RADICAL LEFT DEMOCRATS HAVE LIED, CHEATED, AND STOLEN IN THEIR MANIACAL OBSESSION TO ‘GET TRUMP,’ BUT NOW THEY’VE GONE TOO FAR, INDICTING A TOTALLY INNOCENT MAN IN AN ACT OF OBSTRUCTION AND BLATANT ELECTION INTERFERENCE,” said Trump in a Friday Truth Social post. “HOW MUCH MORE ARE AMERICAN PATRIOTS EXPECTED TO TAKE???…AND ALL OF THIS WHILE OUR COUNTRY IS GOING TO HELL!”
From Melania
As of Saturday afternoon, Melania had not made a public statement about the indictment on her main social media accounts. Her last Truth Social post was from Monday, following a horrific school shooting in Nashville, Tenn.
“My deepest sympathies go out to the victims' families, the Covenant School, the Nashville community, and all those affected by this tragedy. My heart is with you during this difficult time,” she said. That same post went out on Facebook.
Melania last tweeted March 9 about her “Be Best” initiative and NFTs. Her website’s “communiqués” section hasn’t been updated since July.
According to a Friday report in Slate, “the world hasn’t heard a peep from Trump’s inscrutable wife, Melania,” about the indictment.
Audacy reported last month that Melania was enjoying life at Mar-a-Lago, but didn’t want to hear about the case. She has expressed support for her husband’s campaign and sources said she has been “lying low” as he deals with legal issues.
Sightings
Trump and Melania were spotted dining at the Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida Thursday evening after news of the indictment broke, multiple outlets reported.
“As usual, she was seen and not heard,” said Slate, which added that there has been a “lot of idle chatter about how Melania may have taken the news.”
Citing a blurry photo shared to Twitter by Mar-a-Lago member Gina Loudon, The Mercury News reported that Trump looked “uncertain” and that Melania was “smiling” by his side. The New York Post cited the same photo and reported that a “somber” Trump had gone out to dinner with his “supportive wife.” Both outlets noted that Melania was wearing a red dress.
According to the Post, photos also showed club members applauding the couple, who sat at a large round table with friends, per the outlet.
“This is hardly the first time many of us have struggled mightily to understand the enigma that is Melania,” said Slate.
