Indian officials responded to the historical monument Amer Fort on Sunday after the watchtower was struck by lightning. The strike caused people to jump off in a panic, the local newspaper The Hindu reported.
Some of the victims were taking selfies at the top of the watchtower before the lightning struck, according to the BBC.
A senior disaster management official in Jaipur told CNN that when the lightning struck, the tower's wall collapsed with many buried underneath it. Some people also fell into a ditch as the fort fell.
There were 11 pronounced dead, including women and children, at Sawai Man Singh Hospital. 11 others were rescued and stabilized, Saini told CNN.
The search for survivors continued until Monday morning, ensuring that all of those on the monument were accounted for.
"Because it is a hilly area and there are a lot of trees, the rescue teams kept looking till morning in case anyone is left behind," Saini told CNN.
Overall there have been 65 deaths from lightning strikes in northern India, according to CNN.
