LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Rideshare giants Lyft and Uber will no longer require face masks for drivers or passengers, according to statements Tuesday. The decision comes one day after a federal judge struck down the mandate requiring masks on all planes and other forms of public transit.
“While riders and drivers can always cancel any ride they don’t wish to take, health safety reasons – like not wearing a mask – will no longer appear as cancellation options in the app,” Lyft said in a statement announcing its health policy update.

Likewise, Uber has updated its own policy, writing that, as of Tuesday, face masks will not be required but are still recommended.
“Remember, many people still feel safer wearing a mask because of personal or family health situations,” Uber’s updated policy reads.
“So please be respectful of their preferences. And if you ever feel uncomfortable, you can always cancel the trip.”
Both rideshare companies established mask-wearing policies soon after the pandemic began two years ago in 2020, requiring both drivers and passengers to mask up for rides. Both have said that anyone with COVID-19 or any related symptoms should refrain from using rideshare services until they have tested negative for COVID-19.
“We know that everyone has different comfort levels, and anyone who wants to continue wearing a mask is encouraged to do so,” Lyft wrote.
“As always, we expect everyone in the car to follow our Community Guidelines and treat each other with respect.”
