Waters told KNX News 97.1 FM she went to the detention center to find David Huerta, a union president who was detained on Friday following an immigration raid in downtown L.A.
“I wanted to find out where he was, what they’re doing, where they're trying to deport him,” she said. “I went downtown to the detention center, and I saw a couple of the authorities. I don't know who they were, but they could get into the detention center. So I followed them, got up to the door with them, and I showed him my jacket with my United States Congress emblem on it, and told him that I would like to come in. He kept the door in my face and told me they weren't letting everybody in.”
Video posted by user @thestustustudioon X showed Waters approaching the detention center, telling the guard she came to “use her congressional authority to check on David Huerta.”
The guard is heard telling her that “the lobby is secured to all visitors” and to contact the public affairs officer.
