Would you like fries with that? Anyone looking for a summer gig may want to start practicing because McDonald's plans to hire up to 375,000 employees in the U.S. this summer.

McDonald's experienced a significant decline in store traffic in the first quarter, particularly in the U.S., with same-store sales dropping by 3.6% so they're beefing up with new meal deals and a new permanent menu offering -- and with expansion. The company plans to add 900 new restaurants by 2027.

CEO Chris Kempczinski attributed the decline in traffic to lower- and middle-income consumers cutting back on fast food due to concerns about inflation and the economic outlook. During a recent investment call, NBC News reported company leaders said, "More people appear to be skipping breakfast entirely to cut back on spending, or eating breakfast at home."

To address the challenges, McDonald's introduced a U.S. McValue menu and extended its $5 Meal Deal, along with launching new menu items, including two permanent additions.

If the news has you craving the Golden Arches, there's also a new item on the board. McDonald's announced 'juicy, dippable perfection' with its new McCrispy Strips with an all-new Creamy Chili Dip. It's described as a "flavor-packed duo that's here to stay." It marks the first time since 2021 they've debuted a permanent menu item in the U.S.

U.S. Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer applauded the upcoming hiring spree, saying, "McDonald’s is sparking a ripple effect of prosperity for our workers, communities and the economy. By expanding their workforce, the corporation will be driving investment and setting the standard for industry growth, whether as a launch pad for a different career or as a ladder for internal achievements.”
