Film director Michael Moore took a shot at those supporting President Joe Biden on Sunday, saying that those “pushing” him to stay in the race are committing “elder abuse.”
The remarks from Moore came during an interview with MSNBC, where he shared that he thought Biden should step out of the race against Former President Donald Trump.
“The problem here is that I think there’s a form of elder abuse going on here, where the Democratic Party and the people that are part of the apparatus are pushing and pushing and pushing him to stay,” Moore said.
The director went on to say that even with his disagreements on how Biden has handled the Israel and Hamas war, “watching the debate a week ago was heartbreaking.”
Moore isn’t the first notable Democrat to speak out following what the 81-year-old president called a “bad episode” in his debate against Trump.
In the days since the debate late last month, several sitting Democratic Congressmen, experts, pundits, insiders, and more have suggested that it may be time for Biden to step aside.
As for Moore, he says that on an emotional level, he can’t understand why nobody is doing something to stop the president.
“Imagine that was your father up there… Why isn’t anybody doing anything? Why did they do it? Why did they even let him go out on the stage in this condition? Who was looking out for him? Who’s looking out for him right now?” Moore asked.
Moore says that anyone with older family members has been forced to endure “the decline of the people we love as they get older. It’s normal. It happens.”
“That’s not to say that somebody shouldn’t be able to be president at 81 — I don’t believe that,” he continued. “This is not an ageist attitude here.”
However, the president’s debate performance has resulted in something Moore says can’t be undone.
“Something was wrong that night. We all saw it. We can’t unsee it. And as Richard Pryor and before that, Chico Marx said, ‘Who are you going to believe, me or your own lying eyes?’” Moore said. “My eyes weren’t lying, and yours weren’t either.”
