A Florida mother is facing charges after her 2-year-old son shot and killed his father.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office said Marie Ayala, 28, was arrested and charged with manslaughter by culpable negligence, along with various firearms charges, following the death of her husband, 26-year-old Reggie Mabry.

Mabry was fatally shot by the child late last month. Reports indicate he was playing a video game when he was shot in the back. He died at the hospital.

Police said the weapon was not properly stored and was easily accessible to the toddler, who "got a hold of the firearm and accidentally killed his daddy."

According to WKMG, the gun was in a bag in a room where the children were, and Ayala was in the room when the shooting happened.

"Tragedies like this are almost incomprehensible, and they are 100 perecent [sic] preventable," the sheriff's office said in a statement posted to Facebook.

Police noted that it was the couple's 5-year-old who told authorities his little brother had shot their father. A 5-month-old baby was also in the home.

"The children were not injured physically, but they will likely carry emotional wounds forever," police said. "Not only have they effectively lost both parents, the toddler who accidentally shot his father in the back will have to grow up with the knowledge that his actions caused his dad's death."

Police added that the couple wasn't supposed to even have a gun, as both Mabry and Ayala were convicted felons on probation for child neglect and narcotics possession.

Ayala remains in jail without bond, CBS News reported. The children have been placed in state custody.

"If you own a gun, always be responsible. Take the extra steps to secure it properly and keep you and your family safe," police said.
