Tragedy struck on the world’s largest cruise ship over the weekend when a passenger died after jumping from the ship on the first night of a week-long voyage.
The 1,200-foot-long Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas holds 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members and was only about 300 miles from Port Miami at the time of the incident, CruiseHive reported.
The United States Coast Guard shared with the New York Post that the man jumped from the ship soon after it left Florida on its journey to Honduras Sunday morning.
“The cruise ship deployed one of their rescue boats, located the man, and brought him back aboard,” the Coast Guard said. “He was pronounced deceased. Beyond assisting in the search, the US Coast Guard did not have much involvement in this incident.”
The ship was stalled for about two hours while members of the crew helped the Coast Guard search for the passenger, whom they were able to locate.
The passenger was brought back onboard the ship but was in critical condition and later died from the injuries he sustained, CruiseHive reported.
Videos of the incident were shared online as passengers watched the incident unfold.
The cruise line has not yet commented on the incident, and a motive for the passenger’s jump from the ship is not yet known.
The Icon of the Seas made its maiden voyage in January of this year. The ship boasts a massive water park, 40 restaurants, a theater, an ice skating rink, and more.
