A new poll shows American sentiment towards China is growing increasingly negative.

The survey from the Pew Research Center comes amid ongoing legislative threats to the social media app TikTok. The app, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, has withstood calls for a federal ban for months.

Professor Barry Naughton of the School of Global Policy and Strategy at UC San Diego told KCBS that the animosity between American and China has been growing for a decade.

“For the last ten years, the relations between China and the US have been going steadily downhill,” Naughton said. “There’s some blame on both sides, but I think ultimately we have to attribute this to XI Jinping’s re-emphasizing of the role of the Communist Party in China and his insistence on the need to steer China to be a great power in competition with the United States. Of course, that makes the United States very, very uncomfortable.”

Naughton said the situation has become exasperated by a lack of willingness for compromise on either side.

“China really hasn't made any concessions about any substantive issues,” he said. “There are a lot of things that we’re concerned about that China could do. And, you know, we don't see that much change.”
