A gasoline industry analyst has a suggestion for you on how to save money at the gas pump when you’re filling up your car’s tank, but you may not like it.
Patrick DeHaan of GasBuddy said he’s found out firsthand he can save, what amounts to 77 cents a gallon, by going 55 miles per hour on expressways and tollways.
“It’s not rocket science but I think it’s something very difficult for people that are stressed, in a hurry and that’s simply that slowing down can yield you a lot better fuel efficiency and more miles per tank,” he told WBBM.
DeHaan said he’s saving more than five cents per mile and filling up his tank every 400-plus miles, instead of every 300 miles.
He pointed out that his “fuel efficiency went from about 26 doing 80 or so all the way up to about 36 by doing 55 to 60.”
Not only that, but DeHaan said that, if every American driver would modify his or her behavior in a similar way, we would almost overnight see the country’s gas consumption drop enough to push prices lower.
DeHaan admitted cars and, even, semis whiz by him on expressways but one thing they’re not doing is saving as much money as he is on gasoline.
One other benefit of driving slower, DeHaan said, is that driving is a lot more relaxing when he doesn’t have to worry about people getting out of his way.
