Not only is she considered the best women’s tennis player ever, with 23 Grand Slam champion titles, but Serena Williams is also the most tweeted about female athlete ever, according to Twitter.

Following her defeat at the hands of Ajla Tomlijanovic of Australia on Friday at the 2022 U.S. Open, many took to social media praising Williams for her impact on the sport in what was likely the end of her 27-year career.

Twitter sports made the announcement following her exit from the U.S. Open, saying that 74% of those who tweeted about Serena in August and up to Sept. 2 had not tweeted about her all year.

After her loss, Williams shared in an on-court interview that her time spent playing tennis has been “the most incredible ride and journey I’ve ever been on in my life.”

She also took time to share her gratitude to her team, husband, parents, and most importantly, her sister, saying, “I wouldn’t be Serena if there wasn’t Venus.”

Numerous athletes and high-profile celebrities ventured out to watch Williams on Thursday and Friday and even more took to social media to share their praise for her stellar performance to start the tournament.

Williams had announced this summer that she would be retiring from her decorated career in tennis, and for her first day at the tournament in Queens, New York, Twitter had a GOAT emoji honoring her career.

Twitter has only honored a handful of athletes with a GOAT emoji when a hashtag is used in a tweet, and now Williams joins Tom Brady, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Simone Biles.
