No matter how you feel about President Donald Trump, everyone can agree that he loves superlatives, especially when he can put them in ALL CAPS -- THE BEST, GOAT, GREAT, etc.
But Sports Illustrated sportswriter Rick Reilly claims when it comes to the presidential golf game, those words are just that -- all talk.
After Trump claimed to have won the member-member championship at his Bedminster golf club with partner Tommy Urciuoli, Reilly, who has golfed with Trump, accused him of cheating.
He went further, saying that Trump has never won a championship at a course he doesn't own and operate. Reilly said Trump cheats “like a mafia accountant” and called his championships “fake as Velveeta cheese.”He went on to say, “He’s played in Pebble Beach, he’s played in the Tahoe one, where there are rules and judges and cameras. And in those, he’s never finished in the top half. So he wins when anybody who disagrees that he won is out of the club. That’s how he gets it.”
Others on social media also frequently express skepticism about Trump's golf championship wins, pointing out him winning at his own courses. George Conway, a trump critic once married to the president's supporter Kellyanne Conway, took out billboards at Bedminster that said ""Attention Bedminster golfers," the billboard reads. "Trump cheats."
To the contrary, one year ago, Trump said to reporters, "So without bragging I'm a very good golfer," Trump said. "You know, I've won club championships. Many. Many, many club championships and I win them all the time. I still win them. I play just as good now as I did 20 years ago. That's a good sign. That's a good physical and cognitive test."
"You know, when you play, when you win club championships, you're playing against scratch golfers and I often beat them," Trump said. "I mean, this year I won three, and I don't get to play very much, relative to a lot of these guys, they live on the golf course, you know."
