Starlink Wi-Fi to be rolled out on United Airlines flights this year

United Airlines is launching a new partnership with Starlink Wi-Fi to offer passengers on its commercial flights the ability to access the internet.

The company shared the announcement on Sunday, saying it expects to have its entire two-cabin regional fleet outfitted with Starlink Wi-Fi by the end of 2025. However, it will first begin testing the service next month.

United also noted that it plans to fly its first Starlink-equipped mainline plane by the close of 2025.

For members of United’s frequent flyer program, MileagePlus, the new Wi-Fi system will be available free of charge.

“We have a lot planned for our MileagePlus members this year, and adding Starlink to as many planes as we can — as quickly as we can — is at the center of it all,” United MileagePlus CEO Richard Nunn said in a press release.

Nunne went on to say that the new program will “revolutionize the experience of flying United.” He also said that it would help “unlock tons of new partnerships and benefits for our members that otherwise wouldn’t be possible.”

United first announced that it had signed a deal with SpaceX to equip its entire fleet with Starlink Wi-Fi in September, saying it would take place “over the next several years.”

Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, is owned by Elon Musk and has helped bring internet access to areas all across the world. Musk has even helped position Starlink satellites over war zones in Ukraine to aid the country in its fight against Russia.

United isn’t the only airline to sign a deal with Starlink, as Qatar Airways and Hawaiian Airlines have also done so, with both launching the service last year.
