A North Carolina man is dead after his Tesla flew off of an overpass and crashed onto the busy interstate below, authorities say.
The crash happened Friday afternoon along I-40 in Durham, North Carolina.
According to police, the 2017 Tesla initially collided with the rear bumper of another vehicle.
"After the initial impact, the Tesla left the roadway to the right, struck a guardrail, two traffic signs and a telephone pole before going airborne off the embankment above Interstate 40 east," the Durham Police Department said in a statement to WNCN.
The vehicle flipped over and landed across all three lanes of the freeway.
The 45-year-old driver, Zack Wojenski, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The other driver didn't appear to be injured but was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
It's unclear whether Wojenski's Tesla was in self-driving mode at the time of the crash, which closed the freeway for four hours.
The crash remains under investigation.
