“I think it’s absurd that people think I’m supposed to sit at home in the dark and cry every day for the rest of my life.”
That’s what Trina Scott Edwards has to say to her detractors in response to criticism she received for a night out with a friend months after the death of her husband, former Louisiana governor Edwin Edwards.
The dust-up started when a selfie was posted on social media of the widow enjoying a night out, leading to a discussion about just how long a grieving period must be for it to be considered respectable in some people's eyes.
That's because another social media user reposted the photo with the caption, “Poor EWE his ‘grieving’ widow is out partying taking bathroom selfies…wow keep it classy TE.”
After first responding on Facebook, Trina Scott Edwards called into WWL Radio’s Scoot Show to further elaborate on the matter.
Edwards said her late husband would not have wanted her to stop living her life just because he was gone.
“It was not a secret that his health was failing, and we knew in advance what was going to happen. And we had a lot of conversation leading up to it,” Edwards said. “I don’t think people realize he was sick for a very long time, and if you’ve never been in a position where you’re a caretaker, you don’t understand how hard that is.
“I still grieve. There are days when I can’t get out of bed.
I don’t post about that on Facebook because it’s very private. But it doesn’t mean that I’m not grieving. And I think it’s absurd that people think I’m supposed to sit at home in the dark and cry every day for the rest of my life. It doesn’t make any sense to me.”
The majority of social media reaction has been in support of Edwards, whose original post has surpassed 1,000 reactions.
