While speaking with supporters in Michigan on Sunday, former President Donald Trump fired shots at the electric vehicle industry, warning that the state’s historic auto industry was at risk.

During his speech before Oakland County Republicans, Trump claimed that Biden was a “catastrophe for Michigan,” going as far as to say his “environmental extremism is heartless and disloyal and horrible” for American workers.

“Driven by his ridiculous regulations, electric cars will kill more than half of U.S. auto jobs and decimate the suppliers that they decimated already — decimate the suppliers, and it’s going to decimate your jobs, and it’s going to decimate more than anybody else, the state of Michigan,” Trump said. “It is going to be decimation. It’s going to be at a level that people can’t even imagine.”

The Biden administration has remained steadfast in pushing automakers to up their electric car sales. The Environmental Protection Agency predicted in a new proposal released this year that two-thirds of all new cars sold in 2032 will be electric.

In Michigan this could mean changes, as the Mackinac Center for Public Policy reported the state has more than 175,000 auto manufacturing jobs as of 2021. The report found that the number represented 37% of the jobs Michigan had at its peak.

Other topics that Trump touched on included the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement of 2020, which he says created “tough new requirements to ensure more cars are made in American factories by American workers.”

“And it’s happening right here in Michigan,” Trump said. “And this had nothing to do with the Democrats. They’re going to end it. They want every car to be all-electric, except you don’t make all-electric cars too much. You know who does — China.”

Other remarks Trump made included accusing Biden of not caring about religion, claiming that he would stop World War III, and that he would try to rewrite the 14th Amendment.
