The relationship between former President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk appears to be growing stronger by the day, as the Republican presidential nominee hinted at appointing Musk to his Cabinet on Monday.
In an interview with Reuters, Trump praised Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and owner of the social media platform X.
Trump was asked by the media outlet about using Musk in an official capacity should he win the White House in November, to which Trump said he would.
“He’s a very smart guy. I certainly would. If he would do it, I certainly would. He’s a brilliant guy,” Trump told Reuters.
The former president and the world’s richest man have had a growing relationship since the latter endorsed Trump following his attempted assassination.
The pair recently held a two-hour conversation on X, in which Musk had signaled that he was willing to serve on a government commission to study the national debt to help solve the crisis.
“I think it would be great to just have a government efficiency commission that looks at these things to make sure taxpayer money is spent in a good way,” Musk told Trump last week. “I’d be happy to help out on such a commission.”
During the Reuters interview, Trump also said he was open to reversing the $7,500 tax credit for Americans who purchase an electric vehicle. The credit was put in place by the Biden administration to help push drivers toward electric in hopes of addressing climate change.
Musk has not signaled one way or another if he would serve as a member of Trump’s Cabinet.
