Former President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he will hold a press conference at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida on Jan. 6, 2022, the one-year anniversary of an insurrection that some believe tore at the very fabric of democracy.
The press conference will take place the same date a mob of Trump supporters attacked the United States Capitol in an attempt to overturn the 2020 election results and prevent Joe Biden's certification as president. But will that be the only topic of conversation as rumors swirl about whether Trump will run for reelection in 2024? No one yet knows.
But we do have a hint about what he'll say. "Why isn’t the Unselect Committee of highly partisan political hacks investigating the CAUSE of the January 6th protest, which was the rigged Presidential Election of 2020?" Trump said in his statement announcing the news conference.
He added, "Until then, remember, the insurrection took place on November 3rd. It was the completely unarmed protest of the rigged election that took place on January 6th."
There were many injuries during the attack, including 138 police officers.
A week after the attack, the House of Representatives impeached Trump for incitement of insurrection. The Senate later acquitted him.
On July 1, the House put together a select committee to officially investigate the attack on the US Capitol on Jan. 6. They have interviewed over 250 people in connection to the attacks.
Two witnesses, Steve Bannon and Mark Meadows, have been held in criminal contempt of Congress for refusing to testify. Bannon was indicted by a federal jury and is set for a tentative July 18 start date for trial.
Over 30 members of anti-government organizations, like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, were charged with conspiracy for allegedly planning the attacks on the Capitol, although a majority of the people charged had no known affiliation with the far-right groups.
The Jan. 6 committee is currently intending to explore potential criminal wrongdoing by Trump. Additionally, the New York Attorney General Letitia James is investigating the former president's business practices.
Biden's staff has already addressed Jan. 6, with White House press secretary Jen Psaki saying, "Jan. 6 was one of the darkest days in our democracy. It was a day when our nation's capital was under attack and I think there's no question you'll see us commemorate that day."
