Hurricane Ian has brought destruction to the southeastern U.S. this week, including power outages property damage and fatalities.
One bright spot in the storm came when a woman's boyfriend saved a cat from what appears to be a rapidly flooding area, according to a video posted to Twitter.
"Look at Michael saving the kitty," said an off-screen voice as a man can be seen wading nearly waist-deep through water and climbing up near an air conditioner on the side of a structure to get the feline. A caption on the video indicates it was taken near Bonita Beach, Fla.
In the comments section there was tweet from user Lulu Mac that said, "I'm sorry, Megan, but he is everyone's boyfriend now. I don't make the rules." The original video had more than 190,000 likes as of Friday afternoon, and Lulu Mac's comment had close to 12,000.
The tweet poster – an account under the name Megan Cruz Scavo – also included a link to a GoFundMe page in the comments section.
"We are a young couple in Naples," said the fundraiser description. It said their home "suffered terrible damage," and that they are raising funds to restore it. They said they will also use funds to help restore other homes impacted by Hurricane Ian, which made landfall Wednesday. After being downgraded to a tropical storm, Ian was upgraded back to a hurricane Thursday.
"Mike braved the storm to save a cat, who we named Ian, that was stranded clinging for life on a neighbor's AC unit as storm surge rushed in," the GoFundMe page added. "In honor of Ian, and all people and pets affected, we are donating half of the proceeds raised by this to the Naples Humane Society."
As of Friday evening, a little over $5,000 had been raised towards the page's $20,000 goal. Audacy has reached out to the tweet poster for more details.
