In April, a naturist group in Pittsburgh hosted an event called “Balls Out Bowling” – and it turns out, naked bowling is not exclusive to western Pennsylvania.

The American Association for Nude Recreation, and other regional organizations, hold events year-round. These include bowling, skinny dipping, 5ks and even chili cook-offs.

This week on “Something Offbeat”, the president of the AANR, Mitch London, explained how he got into nudism, walks us through the history of the practice, and divulges the most dangerous thing he’s done sans clothes.

“It’s definitely something you know, what we like to call the nude bucket list,” he said of these events. “There’s always, you know, things people like to do nude. You know, there’s nude this, nude that. And, you know – it’s just a lot of normal stuff that people do nude rather than clothed.”

According to the association website, it has served more than 213,000 people in the U.S. and beyond since it was created more than 90 years ago. Listen to London’s full conversation with host Mike Rogers here.

Each week, “Something Offbeat” takes a deeper look at an unusual headline. If you have suggestions for stories the podcast should cover, send them to us at somethingoffbeat@audacy.com.
