A man who walked into a Toyota dealership in California and fatally shot an employee was later killed during a shootout with police.
The incident happened Thursday morning at the Toyota of Berkeley service center, about 13 miles east of San Francisco.
Police received multiple 911 calls starting at 11:14 from people inside the business who said a man armed with a gun walked in and shot a woman employed at the service center, the Alameda County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
Responding officers evacuated the area and then entered the business in search of the shooter. Officers encountered the suspect on the second floor and "multiple officers discharged their firearms."
"The details of that encounter are still under investigation, but we can confirm that the suspect is deceased," the sheriff's office said.
No officers were injured.
Police say the incident was an act of domestic violence, though the relationship between the victim and suspect wasn't immediately clear. No names have been released.
Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguín praised the first responders who "leaped into action and harm's way."
"Their rapid response may have prevented further casualties. We are grateful to our officers for putting their lives on the line to confront this armed suspect," he said in a statement. "The number of guns on our streets continues to pose an unacceptable threat to our community and the many women and men who go to work every day to protect us."
An investigation is ongoing.
