In a heated interview with Lesley Stahl on “60 Minutes,” scheduled to air on Sunday night, President Trump claimed bias and reportedly walked out of the room. In an unprecedented move, Tuesday, the president released nearly 38 minutes of the interview on social media -- days before its official broadcast.
“Look at the bias, hatred and rudeness on behalf of “60 Minutes” and CBS. Tonight’s anchor, Kristen Welker, is far worse! #MAGA,” Trump wrote on Twitter, linking to a Facebook video.
Stahl started the interview at the White House asking Trump about his goals for domestic policy, pivoted to COVID-19 and finally asked him opinion on America’s greatest adversary.
Trump has complained about the “60 Minutes” interview throughout the week, even chiding Stahl about not wearing a mask, but the moment that sent him over the edge was this -- a back-and-forth between himself and Stahl about the economy.
"It was happening. We created the greatest economy in the history of our country. And the other side was coming in--," Trump said.
"You know that's not true," Stahl interrupted.
"It is totally true," Trump responded.
"No," Stahl said. "Virtually every number was the best. We had the best economy ever. And what was happening is things were coming together," Trump said.
Then it was over.
Before the release, Trump sent four separate tweets complaining about the interview. "I will soon be giving a first in television history full, unedited preview of the vicious attempted 'takeout' interview of me by Lesley Stahl of @60Minutes," Trump tweeted earlier Thursday. "Watch her constant interruptions & anger. Compare my full, flowing and 'magnificently brilliant' answers to their 'Q's'."
