(WWJ) Students and staff at Grand Valley State University are mourning one of their own.
University President Philomena Mantella said a runner found the body of a GVSU student near the intramural athletic fields and cross-country trail on the Allendale campus Saturday evening, about 20 miles west of Grand Rapids.
The student’s name has not been released. His or her family has been notified.
In a statement, the Grand Valley State campus police said: “We have not been made aware of any other fatalities or major cases involving our campus.”
Campus police said they are also investigating an off-campus fight involving a white car, that they say is “separate” from the death investigation.
Mantella called the death “jarring and shocking” in a statement sent out to students and staff.
“This tragedy reminds us of the importance of each member of our university community,” Mantella wrote, offering condolences to the student’s loved ones.
The Ottawa County Sheriff, State Police and campus police will join forces for the investigation.
