Nearly 25% of Americans say they will never get COVID-19 vaccine: Poll

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A new Monmouth University poll shows 50% of Americans plan to get the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as it's available to them.

About 24% say it's likely they will never get the vaccine, if they can avoid it.

When split down party lines, Democrats are most eager to get the vaccine as soon as possible, with 72% saying they will get it as soon as it's available to them or have already gotten the shot.

That's compared to 39% of Republicans who say the same.

Four in 10 Republicans, meanwhile, say they never want it.

"It's just amazing how much partisanship has kind of driven into this issue and could potentially impact public health," poll director Patrick Murray said.

When broken down along racial lines, it's a much smaller difference with 58% of white Americans saying they will get the vaccine when available compared to 52% of Americans of color.

The poll also found those who are older are more anxious to get the shot than those who are younger.

When it comes to President Joe Biden, seven in 10 are confident he can put the country back on the road to recovery, that includes more than 1/3 of Republicans.

"In this day and age that qualifies as unbridled bipartisanship," Murray said. "People do want us to move on, be able to move on from this, regardless of what their political point of view is."

The survey finds more people than ever are concerned about a family member getting sick.
