ESPN's Adam Schefter oddly reports Warriors sign Jerome Robinson

NFL and NBA fans were thrown for a loop Wednesday, when ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Warriors had agreed to a training camp contract with guard Jerome Robinson, who spent last season with the Santa Cruz Warriors in the G League.

Schefter is known for breaking NFL news at all hours, but this random bit of NBA transactional news seems to come out of nowhere. It also made me think of the time that NBA reporter Shams Charania broke the news that then-President Donald Trump and the first lady Ivanka tested positive for COVID-19.

So, maybe not the same scale of global news of a Trump getting coronavirus – Robinson’s agreement will barely make a ripple in NBA spheres – but still odd to see Schefter dabble into basketball reporting.

Maybe he just heard some info from his circle of agents and power brokers? I wonder if ESPN colleague and NBA super reporter Adrian Wojnarowski is punching the air right now and calling up some NFL sources.

Robinson, who is listed at 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, was the No. 13 overall pick by the Los Angeles Clippers in 2018. He played in 113 NBA games with Clippers and Washington Wizards for three seasons before spending all of last year in the G League. Robinson averages 4.5 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 14.2 minutes per NBA contest.

In 24 games played with Santa Cruz last season, Robinson averaged 20.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 46.3 percent from the floor and 33.7 percent from 3-point land.

Andre Iguodala still hasn’t announced whether or not he’ll retire before the 2022-23 season, but a roster spot is waiting for him if he wants. For now, Golden State has 13 players under guaranteed contracts next year out of 15 allotted. It’s entirely possible the Warriors roll into the regular season with a 14-man roster, though, given their high luxury tax payments that accompany their league-leading salary.

Assuming Robinson signed a non-guaranteed deal (and not an Exhibit 10 contract, which would put him in the running for a two-way deal) Robinson finds himself in competition with fellow guard Mac McClung for one of the two vacant roster spots. The Warriors already have a pair of two-way players in Lester Quinones and Quinndary Weatherspoon, while center Trevion Williams and guard Pat Spencer are signed under Exhibit 10 deals.

Here’s an updated look at the Warriors’ roster with training camp invitees.
