ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Video has been shared on social media appearing to show St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez participating in a "massive" motorcycle gathering in Dominican Republic. He was reportedly arrested for his role in violating COVID-19 restrictions, but his agent says he was never arrested.
Martinez was back in his native country this offseason and according to Hector Gomez of Deportivo Z 10, he was "violating all the social distancing protocols and the mandatory use of masks."
He shared video and a photo of Martinez on Twitter:
An article from the Diario Libre states that Martinez was arrested for participating in the event on the Puerto Plata boardwalk with singer Denisse Michelle Tejeda, known as "La Perversa."
Martinez's agent is denying the arrest, according to St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter Derrick Goold.
"Spoke to Martinez's representative, and here's what he said: #stlcards pitcher is not currently and was not in custody. He may face a fine for violations. He was being part of the filming of a video, and that drew a crowd in his hometown." Goold is reporting.
KMOX has reached out to the Cardinals for comment and is awaiting a reply.
Martinez, 29, had a 9.90 ERA his five starts in 2020.
