The Kansas City Chiefs put their foot in their mouth with a poorly conceived post on social media this week.

The Chiefs' digital media editors deleted a tweet promoting several of the team's defensive stars, including safety Tyrann Mathieu, who counts "The Landlord" among his several nicknames.

The post, which featured a photo of Mathieu, tackle Chris Jones, and linebacker Frank Clark, was captioned, "The Landlord pulls up with these guys to collect rent ... What do you do?"

The benign but tone-deaf post was panned amid the national surge in unemployment and reduction in income, which has caused housing and food insecurity for millions.

Fox Sports football analyst and former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho said the post reeked of bias.

Pauses on fixed monthly expenses such as rent, mortgages and student loans have been contentious political issues since the outset of the global pandemic.

A national moratorium on evictions was recently extended through January, but the long-term plan was unclear, with millions still facing joblessness or reduced incomes while the pandemic continued raging across the country.

An estimated 30-40 million Americans were reportedly facing potential eviction in January, before the moratorium was extended.
