Commanders adding QB Marcus Mariota on one-year deal

Per Adam Schefter, the Commanders are adding former Eagles QB Marcus Mariota on a one-year deal ‘with a base value of $6 million and upside to $10 million.’

Mariota, 30, was the No. 2 overall pick by the Titans in 2015, but after five years there, has mostly been a backup in his last four seasons with the Raiders, Falcons, and Eagles – and Washington will be his fourth team in four seasons.

The Oregon product was last a starter in Atlanta in 2022, where he played 13 games and had a 61.3 compltion percentage, 2219 yards, and 15 touchdowns to nine interceptions – but he left the team after 13 weeks, when Atlanta was 5-8 and he was benched for Desmond Ridder, and he ultimately underwent knee surgery.

Mariota played in three games as Jalen Hurts’ backup last season, and now will likely fill Jacoby Brissett’s role with the QB the Commanders select at No. 2. This will also increase chatter of a Sam Howell trade, although
