The Dallas Cowboys have a few important decisions to make this offseason and beyond. Tony Pollard and Dalton Schutz are both candidates for the franchise tag as free agents and a few key young pieces are due for new contracts soon.
One of those players is cornerback Trevon Diggs, who Stephen Jones addressed earlier this week. He said that the Cowboys are always looking for the right opportunities to extend their players and Diggs is one of them.
Diggs has 17 interceptions in his three-year career, 11 of which came in the 2021 season. The 24-year-old cornerback could be a Cowboy for years to come if that’s what Dallas decides, but there may be other options on the table.
Bryan Broaddus and Bobby Belt of the Audacy Original Podcast “Love of the Star” threw out some speculative ideas of how the Cowboys could appease or replace Trevon Diggs.
“I’m going to throw this one at you. You ready for this?” Broaddus said (13:33 in player above). “Big picture, Cowboys move the 26th pick to the Buffalo Bills for Stefon Diggs with the thought that if they get his brother on the Cowboys that maybe it will be easier to get Trevon Diggs signed up.”
There was some speculation that Stefon Diggs could be on the outs with the Bills after another disappointing end to the season in Buffalo – and his cryptic tweets aren’t helping.
Bringing in Diggs on the offensive side of the ball would give the Cowboys another playmaker while perhaps persuading Trevon to stay in Dallas with his older brother.
“It’s not a bad thought. It could be an interesting play,” replied Belt, who threw out his own idea to help the Cowboys’ cornerback situation. “The Cowboys decide they don’t want to engage in extension negotiations with Trevon Diggs and they say ‘You know what? Let’s pay Jalen Ramsey. We’ll swap you Diggs for Ramsey.’”
Broaddus’ “Gang of 7” gave him a few different potential prices for Ramsey ranging from a first-round pick to a third-round pick.
The source that speculated about a third-round pick implied that the Rams may want to get away from the Ramsey contract so much that they’re willing to take whatever they can get for the cornerback, Broaddus explained.
The 28-year-old Ramsey had the third-best cornerback grade by Pro Football Focus last season. He signed a five-year, $100 million contract with the Rams in 2020, but it’s very likely that Ramsey wants a new deal
“My guess is Ramsey wants about 65 million in cash over the next three years. It’d be an expensive contract,” Belt said. “I would not argue for that… For the next five years, I would rather have Trevon Diggs than Jalen Ramsey.”
All in all, the Cowboys have plenty of time to figure out what they are going to do with Diggs, their secondary, and their offseason in general. Nevertheless, some speculation about big splashes can’t hurt.
