In many years, the stat line that Sacramento Kings guard De'Aaron Fox is posting so far in the 2020-21 season would be considered All-Star caliber. He's averaging a career-best 22.6 points per game to go along with 6.6 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals. There are only 10 players in basketball with at averages of at least 22 points and 6 assists, including LeBron James, Steph Curry and Damian Lillard.
However, the initial tallying of the All-Star votes after the first week or so of voted revealed that Fox was not in the top ten out of all Western Conference backcourt options, getting beat out by stars like Curry and Lillard, as well as by questionable choices like, yes, Klay Thompson.
But for Fox, it probably doesn't even matter that much, because he thinks it's all a dumb idea in the first place.
"I'm going to be brutally honest, I think it's stupid," Fox said of the possible All-Star Game plan (via Jason Jones). "If we have to wear masks and do all this for a regular game, what's the point of bringing the All-Star Game back?
Fox added that "money makes the world go 'round" and that this is the driving force of their decision (via NBC Sports).
Considering the exhibition is a gathering the league's top players and that it doesn't mean anything in terms of impacting the regular or postseason at all, Fox might not be wrong for considering that the league is making a mistake. Still, he would go in order to avoid getting tagged with a fine.
"You know you get fined if you’re supposed to be in it and you’re not hurt and decide not to play?" Fox said. "That’s a hefty fine so hell yeah I would play in it. I hope I don’t [get] fined for staying that."
The plan, as of now, is for the game to be held on March 7 in Atlanta, though the details are still being finalized.
Instead of holding their annual Pro Bowl, the NFL opted to hold a virtual Pro Bowl weekend. However, it seems like the NBA wants to bring the league's best together as tradition would dictate.
