The Lions continue to show interest in Teddy Bridgewater.
The same day that Dan Campbell praised current backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld, the club hosted Bridgewater on a free agent visit, according to NFL Network.
Bridgewater would be an upgrade for Detroit behind Jared Goff. The Lions made the eight-year vet "a strong contract offer" back in April, according to ESPN, but Bridgewater was said to be weighing interest "from several teams." Now they're circling back.
In Detroit, Bridgewater would be reunited with Campbell after they intersected for two seasons with the Saints. Campbell spoke highly of Bridgewater before the Lions played against him as a member of the Broncos in 2021, saying, “I’ve got a lot of respect for Teddy Bridgewater because I think he’s a winner in this league."
Indeed, Bridgewater went 5-0 for the Saints in 2019 when Drew Brees went down with an injury.
Bridgewater spent last season with the Dolphins, throwing four touchdowns and four picks in five games. He threw 18 touchdowns to seven picks the season before that with Denver. He has a career passer rating of 90.5.
Sudfeld, on the other hand, hasn't throw an NFL pass in three years and has played in just six career games. He's a risky insurance policy for Goff should the Lions' QB1 get hurt, especially for a team with playoff aspirations.
Campbell did profess a measure of confidence in Sudfeld on Monday, calling him "a guy who can go in there and at the very least get you in the right play."
"He can function, he’s not going to panic. Is everything going to be perfect? You just want to know, hey, this isn’t going to be too big for him and he knows the playbook, he’ll get us in the right play and we have to play a certain way and I do believe that with Nate," said Campbell. "And I’m talking about, that’s the starting point."
