Barring any setbacks, Penei Sewell should be in the Lions' lineup Sunday against the Buccaneers.
After missing practice Wednesday and Thursday with an ankle injury, Sewell was back on the field Friday. He was a limited participant and he's listed as questionable for Sunday, but his return to practice bodes well for his chances of playing.
Sewell first injured his ankle in the last practice of training camp, then rolled it again in the Lions' season-opening win over the Rams. Dan Campbell said Friday that the injury is "a little bit more medial than" a high-ankle sprain, "but it's healing. We're just trying to be smart about it."
The All-Pro right tackle told the Free Press this week that he's "good."
On the flip side, Marcus Davenport did not practice this week due to a groin injury and is listed as doubtful for Sunday. That would be a big loss for Detroit after the veteran defensive end made his presence felt across from Aidan Hutchinson in the Lions' season-opening win.
Asked after Friday's practice if he expects to play, Davenport said, "I can't tell," before slipping away from reporters.
Davenport, 28, has had trouble staying healthy in the NFL, including last year when an ankle injury that required surgery limited him to four games with the Vikings.
The good news, said Campbell, is that the debut of defensive tackle DJ Reader will allow the Lions to be flexible up front. Kyle Peko, Josh Paschal, Levi Onwuzurike and Alim McNeill could all have expanded roles on Sunday, Campbell said. He did not mention James Houston.
"(Reader) coming back really opens up a little more versatility that we have on the D-line because really, between Peko, Mac, Levi and Paschal, they can all play anywhere from the nose to the three-technique to the big end. They’re all going to share that load a little bit if Davenport isn't able to go," Campbell said.
Out for Sunday's game are defensive back Ifeatu Melifonwu, who's dealing with an ankle injury, and receiver Isaiah Williams, who suffered an ab injury this week.
Receiver Jameson Williams (ankle) and safety Kerby Joseph (hamstring) are listed as questionable, but both got in limited practices this week and should be good to go.
