The Pistons have reportedly zeroed in on three finalists in their head coaching search: Kevin Ollie, Jarron Collins and Charles Lee. Of course, the landscape of potential candidates has changed dramatically in the last week. In the wake of Monty Williams' firing by the Suns, the Pistons are expected to reach out to the NBA's 2021-22 Coach of the Year. Williams and Pistons GM Troy Weaver have ties from their time together with the Thunder.
Doug Karsch's message to the Pistons is to stop the search and start over:
"When the Pistons' three finalists were narrowed down to Jarron Collins, Kevin Ollie and Charles Lee, since then, Mike Budenholzer became available, Monty Williams became available and now Doc Rivers might become available. Tom Gores, Troy Weaver, stop and start over. And make sure that you're not locked into these three finalists when they're might be better options out there."
Of the current three candidates, Gator says "Kevin Ollie does nothing for me," and Karsch agrees, "He's the one I want the least."
"They were well down the road toward hiring one of these guys, but if you're willing to stop and start over, I don't know that you really want one of these three guys," says Karsch. "I almost feel like they started it too early, they got to their finalists too early and now I don't know that they can back off. Do you really have faith in them if you're willing to just drop them right now?"
"If you trust Troy Weaver to make the decision to hire the coach, then it's on Troy Weaver what he's going to do," says Gator. "And I'm assuming he's got all the power."
